The Insurance Institute for Highway safety has given 2018 models of the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee “poor” ratings in recent crash tests. This is the lowest rating for passenger vehicles. In the tests, both vehicles were crashed into a concrete obstacle along the passenger side bumper. This was done to imitate a real-life accident in which a vehicle might run off the road and hit a tree, light pole, or other object on the passenger side. In both vehicle tests, the passenger crash dummy’s head was slammed forward with enough force to hit the dashboard through the front air bag. Additionally, the side air bags did not deploy, allowing the passenger crash dummy’s head to be thrown outside the vehicle window.
