Acetaminophen, sold under the brand name Tylenol, is one of the most common over-the-counter pain-relieving and fever-reducing medications in the United States. Acetaminophen is the most common pain reliever or fever reducer prescribed for pregnant women. Recently, however, scientific studies have shown that children whose mothers have used acetaminophen during pregnancy have an increased risk of developing autism spectrum disorder, including Asperger’s Syndrome, Kanner’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and other types of autism. In 2019, a Johns Hopkins University study that analyzed umbilical cord blood samples found that newborns with the highest exposure to acetaminophen were about three times more likely to develop autism.
