Tylenol and Autism

Discuss your case with one of our attorneys

Acetaminophen, sold under the brand name Tylenol, is one of the most common over-the-counter pain-relieving and fever-reducing medications in the United States.  Acetaminophen is the most common pain reliever or fever reducer prescribed for pregnant women.  Recently, however, scientific studies have shown that children whose mothers have used acetaminophen during pregnancy have an increased risk of developing autism spectrum disorder, including Asperger’s Syndrome, Kanner’s Syndrome, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, and other types of autism.  In 2019, a Johns Hopkins University study that analyzed umbilical cord blood samples found that newborns with the highest exposure to acetaminophen were about three times more likely to develop autism.

The mass torts attorneys at The Gutierrez Law Firm are investigating cases in which a child received a diagnosis of autism, they are under the age of 18, and their mother used acetaminophen (name brand or generic acetaminophen) during pregnancy.

Some name brands of acetaminophen along with Tylenol are:

  • Excedrin
  • Goody’s
  • Alka-Selzer Plus
  • Backaid Inflammatory Pain Formula
  • Paracetamol
  • Mucinex
  • Nyquil/Dayquil
  • Robitussin

Generic acetaminophen products are sold at most major retailers, including:

  • Walmart
  • Walgreens
  • Target
  • HEB
  • Amazon
  • Target
  • CVS
