Kayla Jean Gutierrez grew up in Jim Wells and Duval County, Texas. After graduating from Premont High School in 2005, Kayla moved to San Antonio, TX to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio. While in college, Kayla would spend her summers working at the Jim Wells County District Clerk’s office and the Jim Wells County District Attorney’s office.
Upon graduation from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management, Kayla worked as an Insurance Agent for United Services Automobile Association (USAA). After leaving USAA, she worked for Congressman Filemon Vela in Washington, D.C. as a staff assistant, while waiting on her acceptance into law school. In June 2013, Kayla moved back to San Antonio and attended St. Mary’s University School of Law. While in law school, Kayla was a student attorney and did numerous volunteer and pro bono projects providing legal assistance to disadvantaged individuals with the St. Mary’s Center for Legal and Social Justice. This included projects such as drafting wills for low income individuals with the Wills Clinic, helping DREAMers obtain deferred action (D.A.C.A.), providing legal outreach and Identification Recovery at San Antonio’s homeless shelter, Haven for Hope, and providing legal assistance for a family adoption.
Due to her pro bono work, Kayla became a member of the Pro Bono College of the State Bar of Texas and was awarded a pro bono certificate upon graduation. Kayla graduated from St. Mary’s School of Law in May of 2016, began working with her father Baldemar and brother Javier at the Gutierrez Law Firm in October of 2016, and became a licensed attorney in November of 2016.
